How does identity verification work

Why does Stella need to verify my identity?

Stella needs to verify your identity to confirm you have the legal authority to manage your company's accounts — such as being a director, owner, or authorised signatory.

This is required to unlock monthly billing, ensuring invoices are issued to verified business owners and protecting against fraud.

How does the identity verification process work?

After selecting your company, you'll be asked to verify your identity. The process has two paths depending on your company registration data:

Path A) via eID (available)

You'll log in with your national eID (NemID, BankID, etc.). Stella matches your verified identity against your company's registered signature rights. If you appear as a director or authorised signatory, verification completes instantly. You'll see a confirmation of your signature rights with no further steps.

Path B) via ID Scan (soon will be available)

If Stella can't match you using information from your eID (for example, if your name isn't available), you'll need to scan a government-issued photo ID (passport or national ID card) using your device camera.

Note: Both paths are equally valid — the ID scan path is simply used when eID data is insufficient for automatic matching. Your data is never stored beyond what's needed for verification.

Which electronic IDs (eIDs) does Stella support?

Stella supports the following national eIDs for identity verification. Using your country's eID is the fastest way to complete verification — no ID scan required.

🇩🇰 Denmark — MitID

MitID is Denmark's current national eID, operated as a public-private partnership between Danish banks and the Agency for Digital Government. It replaced the former NemID system in 2022–2023. Use the MitID app to authenticate.

🇳🇴 Norway — BankID

BankID Norway is the country's primary eID for secure login and digital signing, issued through Norwegian banks.

🇸🇪 Sweden — BankID

BankID is Sweden's primary eID, issued by Swedish banks and used by millions for banking, government services, and identity verification.

Note: If your don't have any of the above mentioned eIDs, you can still verify using a government-issued photo ID (passport or national ID card).

Why did my verification fail?

Verification can fail for a few reasons:

  • You selected the wrong company. If you're a director or signatory at multiple companies, make sure you chose the correct one before starting verification.

  • You don't currently hold company signature rights. Only directors and authorised signatories can complete verification.

  • Your personal details are protected or restricted.

  • Your name isn't yet updated in the company registry. This can take several weeks after a director change — check the registry directly and try again once it reflects the update.

  • The ID scan was blurry or partially obscured. Try again in better lighting with the full document visible.

  • Your ID document has expired.

Is my ID data stored after verification?

Stella uses a third-party identity verification provider to process your ID scan. Your document image is used only to confirm your identity and is not stored on Stella's servers after verification is complete.

The result of the check (pass/fail + your name) is retained as part of your account's compliance record, as required by applicable regulations.
